Technical Officer (Interim):
Irene Thomas-Jackman
Current Club Affiliation:
Sharecroppers
Bio:
Irene
Thomas-Jackman has had a long, interesting and illustrious netball
career. She began playing at a very tender age while she attended the
Success Laventille Government Primary School in Trinidad and Tobago in
1952. It was there she developed a passion for the game and exhibited
early signs of leadership.
Over the past five
decades, she has contributed to the sport as a player, an umpire, a coach and an
administrator. She has served regionally, internationally and in her country of
birth Trinidad and Tobago.
After leaving
school, she became a member of Malvern Netball Club where she played in the Port
of Spain Netball League (POSNL). Due to her hunger for growth, her stay at
Malvern Netball Club was very short, as she felt that the club was not
developing at the pace to give her the desired exposure. In 1970 Irene joined
Achilles Netball Club where she gained quite a bit of experience which lead to
her being the recipient of the 1976 Golden Girl Award. This award is given to a
player who exhibits commitment, discipline, and leadership qualities. Needless
to say this achievement was only the beginning as it propelled her to bigger and
better things.
During her time with
Archillies, she developed her skills as an official of the game which gave her a
better understanding and the knowledge of the game which eventually lead to her
forming her own club, Sharecroppers in 1978. Under her tutelage the club
dominated the lower divisions of the POSNL and was promoted to the highest
division within a very short period of time.
As an umpire she has
officiated for her league, at Trinidad and Tobago Netball Association’s national
tournaments, as well as Caribbean Championships, and Goodwill Series both
locally and internationally. In addition she has also umpired at World
Championships in Singapore and World Youth championships in Wembley.
Ms. Thomas-Jackman
is a trainer and tester of umpires and was a member of the world pool of umpires
until the structure was changed a few years ago. After migrating to the USA in
1986, she became involved with the American Netball Association (ANA) where she
served as the chair of the umpires committee and an executive member before
moving on with another group of members in 1995 to form the Caribbean American
Netball Association (CANA), an organization where she continues to serve
prominently. With CANA she has also served as the chair of the umpire’s
committee and she is currently the sitting technical officer; a position which
allows her to continue to develop officials of the game.
In the area of
coaching, she has also made her mark and is affectionately referred to as
“coach” by many. In 1970 Irene debuted as a coach in her homeland where she
coached Molten Hall Government Primary School along with St. Gabriel’s Primary.
She also coached Providence Girls Secondary and St Martin’s Secondary schools,
all of whom eventually won national titles.
This is in addition
to her own club sharecroppers where she continues to work with the young ones.
Irene’s coaching climaxed in 1985 when she coached the Trinidad & Tobago
National Senior team in Nevis.
This netball
administrator has a unique style and is a forthright individual. At times her
demeanour serves as a deterrent in respect of her popularity among her peers as
well as with others even if she may be well intent.
Her areas of
administration include being President of Sharecroppers, member of Port of Spain
League Executive, Council member of Trinidad and Tobago Netball Association,
Executive member of The American Netball Association, Executive and Board member
of the Caribbean American Netball Association. Through thick and thin she
continues to show commitment and passion to the sport of netball.
